OPERATIONAL DECISION SUPPORT
The ionosphere is a critical and increasingly contested environment for U.S. space operations. Orion’s Ionosphere Mission Operations Center (IMOC) is an operational decision-support suite that provides comprehensive, near real-time ionospheric modeling (RTIM) and visualization. By integrating data from a network of distributed sensors with robust data transport infrastructure and advanced assimilative models, IMOC enables highly reliable space environmental state assessment, forecasting capabilities and mission-critical operational insight. Through IMOC’s data-as-a-service delivery model, we take ionospheric measurments and create accurate ionospheric and radio wave propogation models, to enhance communications, GPS correction models and numerous specialized applications across the space domain.
NOWCAST AND FORECAST
Our IMOC solution utilizes advanced networked sensors, secure data transport infrastructure and state-of-the-art assimilative models to deliver highly reliable space environment monitoring, forecasting and decision support tools. By accurately predicting atmospheric conditions and ionospheric disturbances, IMOC significantly mitigates operational impacts of the space environment. This capability provides crucial error margins that compensate for adverse effects and expands decision-making options during challenging space environment conditions.
IMOC INFASTRUCTURE
IMOC’s computing capabilities feature a GitLab-managed, NIST 800-compliant, DevSecOps pipeline that integrates on-premises high-performance scientific computing with AWS code security and scalable cloud computing infrastructure.
Whether hosted within our secure operations facilities or deployed as a turnkey installation, IMOC secure operations rooms are equipped with monitors that display real-time ionospheric status through cloud-hosted dashboard applications. These displays provide operators with comprehensive environmental situational awareness while simultaneously monitoring data quality metrics to ensure modeling integrity and accuracy, enabling seamless data processing from acquisition through analysis to operational implementation.
ACCESSIBILITY VIA UDL
All data produced from each service at IMOC will be delivered to the Unified Data Library (UDL), allowing consistent access for external consumers. Additionally, the UDL will propagate IMOC-provided data at higher classification levels through the cross-domain solution.
VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION
Orion’s operational verification and validation (V&V) approach focuses on delivering meaningful impact rather than merely interesting data—answering the critical “so what?” question for decision makers. Orion implements rigorous statistical methods for automated V&V of IMOC outputs, including hypothesis testing (t-statistics), significance testing (p-values), variance analysis (F-statistics), distribution goodness-of-fit tests (Shapiro-Wilk, Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and advanced model validation through resampling techniques. This comprehensive approach centers on two fundamental principles: hypothesis-driven testing and appropriate measurement selection, ensuring IMOC capabilities remain operationally relevant and compelling while maintaining performance.
A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE
Model coupling can further improve ionospheric specification by enhancing difficult-to-observe atmospheric regions through combined model input. Orion can augment modeling capabilities by expanding existing assimilative models to incorporate additional data of interest or by implementing ensemble techniques to improve forecasting and uncertainty specification. For example, Orion’s Modern, Modular Model for Space Domain Awareness (M3SDA) does not currently assimilate ultraviolet (UV) observation data, but this capability could be added to improve its results and further enhance its performance.
Model coupling also significantly enhances ionospheric forecasting by optimizing data integration within a Bayesian-style network through synchronized multi-model frameworks. Orion expands these capabilities through strategic development initiatives, including the enhancement of existing assimilative models to incorporate emerging data streams and the implementation of sophisticated ensemble techniques. These advancements deliver superior forecasting precision and comprehensive uncertainty quantification, providing unprecedented environmental intelligence for missioncritical applications.
